One of the style of print i aim to use in this brief is mono print production to do this to the full potential and correctly first i will research how to do it, what makes it different, what it create and why its used. The research will inform how i use the mono print, allow me to make mono prints myself and inform the design pattern i use whilst creating/following the processes. To link this style to my essay i will have to highlight the benefits of mono print and how digital media can enhance the outcome, this will be done my scanning in the final mono print and experimenting with them on photoshop, this will also allow me to add text ect feature to the mono print that will be hard to do during the process.

Also known as the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques , a monoprint is essentially a printed painting. The characteristic of this method is that no two prints are alike; although images can be similar, editioning is not possible.
The appeal of the monoprint lies in the unique translucency that creates a quality of light very different from a painting on paper or a print, and the beauty of this media is also in its spontaneity and its combination of printmaking, painting and drawing mediums.Because monotype printing allows considerable freedom in the approach to imagery, this is considered to be a very versatile method
Monoprints are created by manually adding (additive method) or removing (subtractive method) ink from a plate which is then printed using a printing press. Many effects can be achieved in monotypes that are not possible with any other technique.
In the subtractive method you cover a surface (metal or plastic plate) entirely with colour (usually with etching or litho ink), then you remove the ink partially or wholly to expose areas of the picture being made. This process can be carried out using etching style effect on to the ink surface on plate or by using a stencil to only print the selected areas at once.
With the additive method, you start with a clean plate and apply the ink or watercolor media in various ways, but as etching ink is a fairly unmanageable substance it is hard to achieve the intended effect.
There are three main methods for making a monotype:
- The additive or light-field method, in which the image is painted by adding or building up pigment onto the plate
- The subtractive or dark-field method where the entire plate is covered with a thin layer of pigment, which the artist then works out his image by removing some of the pigment with brushes, rags, sticks, or other tools.
- The third method is a combination of the two.

Monoprint is a process in which one can use a combination of painting and printmaking techniques. It results in a unique image and some effects that cannot be achieved in any other form of art. Monoprint is a spontaneous technique that gives the artist freedom to work with a wide selection of materials such as inks, pencils, crayons, and pastels, and to choose from a variety of methods to transfer images.
There are two basic methods of working on the plate, the additive and the subtractive. In the additive approach, the image is painted directly on the plate. This is known as working into light filled. In a subtractive approach, the ink is applied all over the plate, and then the image is removed with various tools. This method is also known as working from a dark filled.
Mono printing
Mono printing uses printing materials but only produces one image. There are two techniques.
Technique one
- place glass on top of an image
- trace the image onto the glass using paint
- lay paper over the surface and smooth the back with a roller
- peel off the paper to reveal your image
Explore the different thicknesses of ink and try scratching into the ink.
Technique two
- roll out a layer of thin ink onto a surface and then place paper over the top
- draw onto the back of the paper
- peel off the paper
Try different tools to create different thicknesses of line, or use your fingers to create shading techniques.
Videos on How to Mono Print
Watching videos of professional and other creative create mono print will teach me the technique and ways to create these pieces, this will inform the design and the way i produce this work.

For this style art print i think the best way to research and learn how it work is to produce some myself, learn by trail and error, for this brief iw intent to produce all the main 3 styles of print for the covers, this is as i feel learning how print and digital can be combined by doing it fit along side my essay.
