The text discussed in the session related to the topic of the male glaze in visual cinema, the task for this lesson is to talk in groups about the said texts then summarise in 300 word a triangulation of the 3 topics and views.

discuss -
'What kind of document is it?
Who is the author (Look them up on Google)?
In summary what is being discussed/argued?
6 points for the primary Laura Mulvey Text, 3 points for the others.
In reference to what?'

Laura Mulvey Text
The main subject areas in this text is the female role in cinema, the male glaze, how women are displayed in two ways; as an erotic object for the viewer, as an erotic object for the hero/male character, males not being the burden of the same sexual objectification, scopophilia (pleasure in looking), how the male subject controls the story.
Laura Mulvey is a professor of  of film and media studies at Birkbeck, University of London. She worked at the British Film Institute for many years before taking up her current position. But Mainly in relation to this topic is a British feminist film theorist, therefore will have a strongly feminist view on this subject area.

John Storey Text
John Storey is a Professor of Cultural Studies at sunderland University. The article wrote her is more modern than the eariler text but talks about it heavy in relation to the Freud theory of the males looking at the women not seeing penis therefor becoming scared of castration. The author talks about how Laura Mulvey states the pleasure of popular cinema must be destroyed in order to liberate women from the exploitation. The author talks heavy about the erotic look of the specters, how the audience view the women roles but in a dismissal version of Laura theories. John higthglight part of the issues she talks about then expands on them.

Richard Dryer Text
Richard Dryer is a Gay man, this relate his view to gay theory to be applied to the essay wrote by Laura Mulvey and her point of view the cinema, the article she writes does not take his view on to consideration. Here in his criticism, he talks about film in cinema where the male is also subject to this glaze of a sexual nature by the female actors as well as the audience.

triangulation-
What is the relationship between the writers?
Does one text help to highlight important information in the primary text?
Are there any criticisms?
What are they?
How are they justified?'

In Laura Mulvey’s book ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’ she explored the idea of the of women’s role in cinema in the articles ‘Women as image, Man as bearer of the look.’ The article is heavily effected by her personal view as a feminist film critic therefore is written in critical analysation of the subject. She speculates that women’s role in cinema is to be the pleasure of the male glaze for audience or for the hero/on screen male characters desire. Her opinion is that these roles objectifies women as they are sued only for the pleasure of the males in popular cinema, her view is that this must be destroyed in order to liberate women from exploitation. This is then explored more via a slightly critical angle via the article ‘Cine-psychoanalysis’ written by psychologist John Storey, in this part of his book ‘Cultural Theory and Popular Culture’ where he focuses more heavily on the subject of scopophilia (pleasure in looking) discussed by Laura Mulvey as the pleasure of the viewer which in Muvleys article is male.  This piece then relates how Mulvey text relates the male glaze to the theory of Freud theory where males see women without a penis enforces fear due to relation to castration. Heavily Storey explores her theories from psychological angle, his article explains Laura Mulvey ideas/theories in more detail whilst exploring them from this view point. Richard Dryer piece in Stars then explores Mulveys article from a critical perspective. Dryer explored how Mulvey is very certain on the expression that only females can be sexualized in films then be subjects of scopophilia whereas Richard Dryer perspective is that in in selected films, with given examples the male character can become the object of the female glaze, to be seen sexually but the audience as well as the on screen characters. Richard Dryer is a gay men and this will influence his ideas in the articles due to queer theory but is still relevant due to inclusion of females as the viewer. All 3 articles discuss the males glaze and scopophilia in different ways as the content influence by their personal views but also relate to each other as they are view on Laura Mulvey articles.
