Letter Press Second Test
One of the issues with the first letter press test was that the fonts available only have 2 sans serif typefaces, gills sans and universe, when i completely the last test couldn't use Gill Sans as some of the letter where being uses in a chase for someone else even thought this is the most simple type style to the one the magazine uses. To make this font style mimic the type of the cover a sans serif font gills sans is the closest i can get to Futura which is available , this is type was picked as it has curved bowls and the same basic structure without the curved terminals. The letter press only has a few typestyle available and these are nay is slighted weight and form, for this cover i had ago use uppercase gills sans were the cover uses lowercase, this is as these are the only typeface that is even similar to the one i'm trying to recreate, letter press also doesn't have bolder italic and has a limited number of type sizes compare to digital fonts which can be changed easily rather than this which will have to be completely redone for a different typeface. Its hard to experiment with different fonts, size, style using letter press where as digital can be done very easily which a why digital is used over this technique for experimental work.
For this experiment i waited for the gills sans font tot be available for all the letter of 'THE GENTLE WOMEN' and 'KATE NASH'. One of the issues with this print technique is that letter forms and punctuation can't be easily lost/used therefore can't be included in the chase, this means for example in this case that i had to use a bigger M that was 50pt compared to the 48pt letters. This means the setting for the title will be slightly different for this letterform M, also it made it a lot harder to fit it evenly in the chase the letter nada different size, this was evened out by lead but meant that the final print would have a bigger m but this couldn't avoid for this technique. Many of these letters form are missing from the set of letter press available at college, this is many of the letters have been given tot the college therefore not the whole set is available, this is an issues that doesn't happen digitally as all the letter forms are available.
Also the s and the h form nash had to be the bigger size too as this was not available as well
ISSUES -
missing letter forms
hard to get san serif fonts
missing punctuation
hard to access the missing parts/replace
hard to change/experiment with type style
tried to use an upside W for the M but this would print lower down |
The use for a slightly bigger M which had to be changed for this text to be work due to lack of available letter forms
S and H changed to bigger size so the word could be created
Issues with alining the text due to the size difference, this took up lots of time where as digitally this could have ben avoid
The final print the G feel put of the cause and had to be place in separate, this is as the there were no space bars available for this typeface, this wouldn't have been an issue digitally
due to the size of the press and the chase the letter could only be places in these selected places, this didn't aline up with the cover style i was trying to copy. The letters had to place i here to make they fit and be useable, this meant the letters have to overlap the print which can't be avoid in this technique whereas can be easily changed digitally.
ISSUE-
can't change the letter placement
A4 the biggest size a could print onto
Final Prints
overall benefits cannot be side via this photograph of the print, the final print will be included
The major benefits for this manual print is that it uses sliver ink but this can't be seen on the photos of the cover, digital media can't use this colour ink, using a metallic ink like sliver add detail to the producet making it a premium products that command premium prices in the marketplace. Since this technique takes more time and adds premium nature to the products i means it can be sold for more which benefits the magazine production. The texture of the print also stands out as against the surface letterpress printing which creates crisp, clean lines and bold patterns that have greater visual definition than most other printing techniques.the rich texture created by the impression adds a level of intimacy and uniqueness to each piece which cannot be done using digital media.
BENEFITS-
becomes a premium product
adds sliver ink
create a unique cover
once can be created can be repeated to any document accurately
One of the benefits of letter press mean that once the chase has been created it could be printed on to any material or image and keep the same print result. This help keep a constant house style over a set of covers or imagery that would be neededs that it could be used each time and have the exactly sen results. Letterpress used here create crisp, clean lines and bold test that uses a high-pigment-level ink, making the images and typography sharp. The handmade, high-quality attributes of letterpress images lend a sense of intimacy and craftsmanship to the work, increasing its value both to the printer and consumer of the letterpress printed product meaning that this cover could be sold for more and improving the quietly of the magazine brand identity.
