These samples are the samples of my first experimental mono prints for the eye magazine cover, they are based around the use of bold overlapping cover styles seen in the current magazine covers designs. The major benefit of mono print is the ability to produce something where the outcome is totally random and a one off design that can be recreated, this follow with the abstracts expressive style of the current magazine covers.
These are the first prints i have produced, they use a very simple geometric stencil as this was more of a test to see how i use mono print, i conducted this test to produce the simplest form of mono print to see how the ink is used and how to process works.
first tests
After completely the test prints i wanted to apply a style to the designs, after look at existing eye magazine covers there was a recurring speak bubble shaped used. I felt this could represent the way that the magazine talks, expressive opinions and discusses art as the speak bubble in a internationally recognized symbol for talking/opinions. This symbol is very simple as this which reflect the style of the existing covers, they take simple letter form and make this the focus of the design, therefore i will bases these print around this form. The aim was to create a cover that was elementary but create a complex design by the mono print techniques, experimentation with overlaps using the different forms/styles of monoprinting, negatives and positives. Selecting this basic form as a starting point will allow the print style to show how it be used to give design depth to a simple stencil, how mono print can start of which such a plain item but the technique used give it a unconventional innovative unique effect to the output.
MONO PRINTING CAN CREATE COMPLEX DESIGNS OUT OF BASIC FORMS, using mono print is easy to create a design that is aesthetically better than a piece would take a large amount of photoshop knowlegde to produce, print can be done by almost anyone and the outcome are positive compared to digital design which need a greater knowlegde. Its easier to produce prints in this way even if it takes longer. These outcomes showcase how this style of mark making can be used with even simple subject to add attraction/detail/interest to the piece via the overlaps, colour change and unique style.
second test
these have a them to the design are created around the speech bubble form to link to the content of the magazine which is opinions and reviews about art. The form over lap and differ to show how people opinions on art can be along the same lines but still completely different but how the opinions built up together to produce the magazine. These prints reflect the idea that the magazine is a combination of different opinions so is a combination of different speech bubbles
third test
After the second test i was feeling more confident with the style and the medium, i decided to create a print in the style of a current trend that is popular with more indie companies and bands. Eye magazine is at the forefront of the design world, using the cover to reflect a current style that is used thought the design industry will show its knowlegde. This decorative techniques is based around the fluid forms of water and ink, its become popular in recent years due to album covers of this style and marbling effect becoming more popular. As water always flows in a different way i felt that using mono print which always create one of pieces would be a good way to represent this style. As i had made a few mono print using a stencil i wanted to experiment using mark making effects over the ink, create a more random design that couldn't be reproduced and as this style is popular at the moment it would be relevant to current markets.

TESTS
MONO PRINT CONCLUSION
benefits
-texture effect
-abstract style that is a response to the materials use and how they react together
-just to it being causes the material responses can be done digitally
-every time give a different version or effect
-creative style that allows people to experiment with different mediums
-visually pleasing
-once set up its easy to produce loads of unique print fast
-its has a style that can't be mocked by any other media
-personal feel
-due to its nature it seem impossible to notice mistakes/issues
-mistakes can be turn around/ actually work better
disadvantages
-takes a lot of time to set up/clean
-very messy
-can't react look when it works
-hard to produce a intended perfect outcome
-hard to involve text
Over all this process was long and very messy, it ha it bad point but the final outcome expressed a style that i couldn't create digitally and to me that made it worth it, it's imperfect style is stand out as bizarre yet intriguing due to the complex design style. This style of art reflects more painting effects that perfected digital files, it seem more person the artist and has a free way of expressing naturally imperfection. It allows the artist to create a large amount of different samples, try a range of different effects which gives freedom to the create anything, the outcome are different overtime and this creates a sense of mystery to the piece. Artist can create any patten/design by mistake or on purpose, sometimes as a found out whilst following this produces the mistake turn out the due to the fact they are totally unplanned and messy yet overlapping with bright colours that shows a style of unrestricted thinking. As a outcome for practical brief for a deadline this isle might not be the best outcome if the indented outcome had to fit a certain criteria where these outcome can't be controlled , or if the materials where available it might be hard to produce in quick space of time it might not be the most effect form of media. For this brief where its for eye magazine cover which can be expressive and follow unconventional art style rather than a perfectly formed piece of modernist minimal graphics i feel the effect on the outcome are prefect, it create an output that can be appalled digitally to be suitable for the cover without much editing. The forms created by the water slashed here reflect the style aimed form but as it's mono it will be totally different any other existing work, with mono print the final outcome will be an individual so there not chance of anyone copying they same effect exactly, the is mean the cover can never be recreated give it a feel of unique promoting by the magazine. The style of printing defines the publics views on art so it work to set the content of an art magazine by setting the theme.
FEEDBACK
'when mono print will be scanned i they will lose some of their texture so the effect might be lost'
'if every cover was mono pruned it would be different every time'
'they are an expressive style but it wouldn't be fit for a defined brief'
'some people might not like the freedom of the art style'
'its has very different effect then digital so if it was compare to digital for example on a shelf it would stand out more'
'its a complete contrast between the normal text heavy or photography based magazine cover for normal publications'
