COP - Practical Work - Screen Print Development

Screen Print Development

For this brief i will be screen printing a cover of creative review magazine, this will design digitally then screen print to show how the techniques work together to produce the outcome. This cover aims to show the ease digital design and development combined with the benefits of specialized ink that are are very durable, the colours are extremely vivid which make this a unique reproduction techniques. For this cover to be accurate to help it with the house style of magazine production and the over all design style of the company i will use the layout and styles of the existing covers.
The existing cover showcase work produced by people that are interviews inside the magazine, this different from most magazine that show the artists on the cover creative review shows the work, this is as for the magazine the art is the important part not the artist.  So for this brief will create a cover that showcase the work of screen print artist, linking the subject of the cover to the print technique it will be demonstrating. The aim of this print is to highlight the benefits of screen printing not my design skills therefore i feel including artist work on the cover is a more direct way to focus on this.

-digital create the layer and separate them adding a all black filter so the can be exposed on to screens
-digital sourcing the imagery
-apply a brand style to a document using digital media
-screen printing the final document using specialized ink for the document
-screen print easily on to different paper stocks to show its easier to print on different stock this way
-create multiple version

The covers of Creative Review

(these images are square as they are from the facebook page, this is largest collection of the magazine covers as i wanted to get the most available research but the actual magazine covers are A4 size)

House Style

One of the benefits of digital media is that a logo/branding can be applied to any document easily and accurately, it can be used to apply it to different designs or work ect quickly. This is very useful for this brief as it has allowed me to add the magazines logos to the covers, for the screen print i will apply the magazine header to the document using screen print, once this screen had been created it will allow me to apply this logo to any surface or work, this is benefit of screen printing it can used multiple times on different textures and always produce the same outcome ,also it would be very fast and cheap to reproduce this print after the screen was created.   To create the layer so i could expose the logo on the screen i needed to create a solid black image the print it on inkjet paper, this was very easy to do using digital media software photoshop.

heading for creative review magazine
After finding the logo and header for the branding i then wanted to apple the text, change the date and title of this issues of the magazine so it would correspond to the cover i was creating, to do this i had to find the text used
the magazine used caslon shaded
Then try to find the right size/kerning compared to the title

After finding a the type that was very similar to the need text it turned out that screen print can only produce text that is over 12pt, this text has to be 10pt to be the right size for this document therefore it wouldn't print and would just burn out  to avoid this which would leave a mark on the final print i removed the text. As the heading text/the logo with the line under would still be included it will still be recognisable as a creative review magazine cover but this is a downside to screen print.
DOWNSIDE - al text must be over 12pt to screen print

final header for the cover

Artist Research
For the cover of this magazine i have decided to use work an artists that specializes in screen printed outcomes, this is to link the design on the cover to the printing method. Its purpose of this cover is to show how digital can enhance  and be used used along with screen print, digital media is how i will  apply someone else work to the cover as we all research the artists, without this i would have to draw my own so this also shows more collaboration techniques of how digital can be beneficial for apply work to different media/documents then screen print can be used to print these documents. In this case digital media was used in the design process, it allowed me to research artist, find work, apply work to a document apply the house style of creative review to this document then separate the colour a layers into black so it could be exposed on the screen. This idea will demonstrate the benefits of screen printing in the style of artist that uses this form, use work that is made for screen printing so will work the best for it, they wont need to be design alteration for the process . To do this i had to first research screen print artists  i found this article on People of Print which show their work and links to the top screen print artists.

Jim O’Raw
A print maker, contributor and in-house artist of People of Print, Jim O’Raw has worked alongside our director, Marcroy Smith, for over half decade. With his distinct style of using fluro colours in a CMYK process, Jim’s artwork promises to be original and provides the feel of looking at faded film-developed photos.

Poster Roast / UKPA
Poster Roast was set up in 2007 by Chris White with an aim to promote poster artists in the UK. Assisted by his wife, Alex White, Poster Roast expanded over time and hosted a number of curated exhibitions of some the most influential artists from throughout the UK. Their belief was that a poster would not exist without music, hence, some of the finest bands were often selected to perform live sets alongside a showcase of posters. Poster Roast has since been put to rest and a new organisation known as UK Poster Association has been born and acts as an organising body and web resource to promote the UK gig poster scene, with a focus on limited edition, screen printed works.

Feedback Most Popular Covers

Cover1

Layers it would take to produce this cover

Even thought this was most popular cover idea the amount of layer it would take to produce its suitable for this brief as i have 2 other covers to create for the deadline and the more layers their is the more time it takes to screen print the most. Also most screen prints consist of 3-4 layers so to reflect practical screen printing procedures i don't want to go over 3 layers.

Cover 2

Layers it would take to produce this cover

This is the second most popular cover from research i conducted, this illustration uses very thin lines which maybe have issues when being exposed on to the screen but i will test this cover to see if it works as i feel the detail will produce the best outcome. I will look at using fluorescent or glow in the dark inks for the imagery as this is benefit of screen printing that can be demonstrated on this cover.
